The short answer
The best healthy soda alternatives keep the bubbles and the flavor but drop most of the sugar. Fiber sodas, protein sodas, and flavored sparkling waters all fit. A regular 12 oz cola has 39g of sugar. Many of these have single digits, and some have none.
Soda is hard to quit because it is not just sugar. It is the cold can, the fizz, the bite of cola, the little break in your day. Plain water does not scratch that itch. The good news: there is now a whole aisle of drinks that keep the soda part and cut most of the sugar.
Why regular soda is worth swapping
A 12 oz can of Coca-Cola has 140 calories and 39g of sugar, all of it added. The FDA Daily Value for added sugar is 50g. So one can uses up most of a day's worth, with nothing else to show for it: no protein, no fiber.
If you drink one a day, a swap is one of the simplest changes you can make. You do not have to give up the habit. You just change what is in the can. For more on daily limits, see how much added sugar per day.
The main kinds of soda alternatives
Here are the big groups, and what each one is good at.
| Type | What it is | Good if you want |
|---|---|---|
| Fiber or prebiotic soda | Soda made with added fiber and less sugar | Classic soda flavors, plus some fiber |
| Protein soda | Soda with protein added and no sugar | A sweet fizzy drink that also counts toward your protein |
| Flavored sparkling water | Bubbles plus fruit or botanical flavor, little or no sweetener | Something light and crisp |
| Sparkling coconut water | Coconut water with bubbles | A fruity, less sweet sip |
| Adaptogen or mushroom soda | Soda made with herbs or mushrooms | Something new and different |
None of these is magic. They are just better trades for a drink you were going to have anyway.
What to check on the can
Flip the can around and look at a few things:
- Added sugar. This is the big one. Under 5g is a solid target for a soda swap.
- Sweetener. Many swaps use stevia, monk fruit, allulose, or sugar alcohols. Some people love them, some taste an aftertaste. Try a few before you stock up.
- Fiber. Prebiotic sodas often have a lot. If you are not used to fiber, go slow. A full can on an empty stomach can make some people gassy.
- Caffeine. Some colas have it, some do not. Check if you drink them late in the day.
Real examples, with label numbers
These are three drinks we like, and why.
- OLIPOP Strawberry Vanilla. 45 calories, 9g of fiber, and 5g of sugar per can. That is about a third of the 28g fiber Daily Value. It tastes like a cream soda.
- Barebells Protein Soda Classic Cola. 50 calories, 10g of protein, and 0g of sugar. It tastes like cola, which is the whole point.
- DRAM Citrus & Blossoms Sparkling Water. Sparkling water with citrus and botanicals. Good when you want something lighter than soda.
Tip: if you drink soda for the caffeine, check that your swap has some. If you drink it for the sugar rush, give your taste buds a week or two to adjust.

How to actually make the switch
- Swap one, not all. Replace your daily can first. Keep the rest the same.
- Match the flavor. If you drink cola, start with a cola. A grapefruit sparkling water will not feel like a fair trade.
- Keep them cold. A warm alternative soda is nobody's friend.
- Rotate. Having two or three options in the fridge keeps it from feeling like a diet.
Finding the one you like
The hard part is that you will not love every one. Taste is personal, and sweeteners hit people differently. But most of these come from small brands, and online they often come in cases of 12. Buying three cases to find the one you like gets expensive fast.
finds box is a box of 10 snacks and drinks we picked and tasted ourselves. A box has up to 2 drinks (cans are heavy), so you can try a soda swap alongside 8 snacks. Want a specific one? Build your own box and add it. Every item lists its protein, fiber, and sugar.
Common questions
Diet soda has no sugar, so it is a step down from regular soda for sugar. It also has no fiber or protein. Fiber and protein sodas give you a bit more for the same can.
Some do and some do not. Check the label, since it varies by brand and flavor.
Up to 2 per box, because cans are heavy. The rest of the box is snacks.
