The short answer

The best healthy swap is one that scratches the same itch. Trade a Snickers for a David protein bar (28g of protein, 0g of sugar), a Coca-Cola for Barebells Protein Soda (0g of sugar), and Doritos for Wilde protein chips (10g of protein). Same craving, much better numbers.

Most "healthy swap" lists tell you to eat carrots when you want chips. That does not work. If you want something crunchy and salty, you want something crunchy and salty.

The swaps below are different. Each one is the same kind of snack: a candy bar for a candy bar, a soda for a soda, chips for chips. You keep the habit and drop most of the sugar.

The swap table

Here are the big four, with numbers from each nutrition label.

Your usualSwap forThe difference
Snickers, 1.86 oz (250 cal, 4g protein, 27g sugar)David Peanut Butter Chocolate Chunk Bar150 cal, 28g protein, 0g sugar
Coca-Cola, 12 oz (140 cal, 39g sugar)Barebells Protein Soda Classic Cola50 cal, 10g protein, 0g sugar
Hershey's Milk Chocolate, 1.55 oz (24g sugar)Hormbles Chormbles Salted Fudge10g protein, 0g sugar
Doritos Nacho Cheese, 1 oz (2g protein)Wilde Protein Chips10g protein

Look at the soda row. Swap one can a day and you skip 39g of sugar, which is most of the FDA's 50g Daily Value for added sugars.

More swaps by craving

Sugary cereal

Breakfast cereal can carry a lot of sugar. Magic Spoon Cocoa Cereal has 13g of protein and no sugar. Man Cereal Fruity has zero sugar and still tastes fruity. Both are good dry, by the handful, too.

Rice crispy treats

Magic Spoon Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Treats have 12g of protein and 1g of sugar.

Regular soda, if you want fiber instead of protein

OLIPOP Strawberry Vanilla has 9g of fiber and 5g of sugar a can. Read more in healthy soda alternatives.

Cheesy popcorn

KhLoud Truffle and White Cheddar Protein Popcorn has 7g of protein.

Why "same snack, better label" works

A swap only helps if you stick with it. A few reasons this kind of swap tends to stick:

  • You keep the ritual. The 3pm soda or the after-dinner candy bar stays. Only the label changes.
  • Protein and fiber fill you up. A bar with 28g of protein is more filling than one with 4g, so one is often enough.
  • No feeling of missing out. You are still eating a chip, a bar, a soda.

One honest note: "healthier" is not the same as "eat unlimited." Protein bars and chips still have calories. Check the serving size.

How to start without overhauling your pantry

  1. Pick the one junk food you eat most often.
  2. Swap just that one for two weeks.
  3. Once it feels normal, pick the next one.

Small steps like this add up. Swap a daily soda and a daily candy bar, and you cut 66g of sugar a day, using the Coca-Cola and Snickers labels above. You did not give up a single snack time to get there.

The catch: swaps are hard to find

Many of the best swaps come from small brands. They are hard to find in one store, and online they usually come in cases of 12. Buying four cases to find your four swaps gets pricey fast, and you might not like them all.

finds box lets you try 10 in one go. Every item is high in protein, high in fiber, or low in sugar, and we list the macros for each. Want to pick your own swaps? Build your own box with up to 10 items. Find your favorites first, then buy the case.

Common questions

Some come very close, and some taste different in a way you may end up liking more. Taste is personal, so try a few before you commit.

Some are close. Check the label for protein, added sugar, and calories, and compare them to the candy bar you would have eaten.
